NPL Winter League Update
Victories, Legends, and the Road to Roehampton so far!
It has been an exhilarating few weeks for the Berkhamsted Lawn Tennis & Squash Racket Sports Club (BLTSRC) Men’s team. From hosting British tennis royalty to securing dominant wins, the quest to reach the National Finals at Roehampton in May is in full swing. Here is a round-up of our most recent action from the courts in Berkhamsted.
.
Recent Success: Clinical 4-0 Victory vs. Coolhurst
The most recent fixture on Sunday, 11th January saw us welcome London-based Coolhurst Tennis Club for 4th match of the season. After a narrow defeat in the BLTSRC Men’s team during the previous outing (more details below), the pressure was on to secure a win and keep the finals hopes alive.
The teams of Josh Sapwell, Josh Rose, Alexis Canter, and Patrick Brady were simply too strong. In a display of total dominance, the teams dropped only eight games across the entire match:
- Josh & Josh: Secured 6-3, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-1 victories.
- Alexis & Pat: Cruised to 6-0, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-1 wins.
The 4-0 result was a testament to the hard work the squad is putting in. A huge thank you to the supporters who braved the chilly ITC conditions—the atmosphere was electric!
Flashback: Hosting a Legend vs. Stoke Poges
The momentum for this season was truly set during BLTSRC team second match against the reigning NPL Champions, Stoke Poges. In a massive compliment to BLTSRC reputation, Stoke Poges fielded a world-class lineup featuring British Tennis Legend Dan Evans alongside three ATP-ranked players.
Having a world-class talent like Evans at BLTSRC was a special moment for members and junior players alike, with Dan proving to be a fantastic ambassador for the sport.
BLTSRC Men’s team pushed the champions to the absolute limit:
- Josh Sapwell & Josh Rose pulled off a stunning 3-6, 7-6, 13-11 Championship Tie-Break win against Marcus Walters and Joe Leather.
- Pat Brady & Alexis Canter nearly forced a 2-2 draw, losing an agonisingly close tie-break 8-10.
While the final score was a 3-1 loss, the performance proved that BLTSRC can compete with the very best in the country.
What’s Next? The Battle for the Top Spot
The road doesn’t get any easier! We are now preparing for a massive clash against Cumberland Tennis Club.
- Date: Sunday, 25th January
- Location: The ITC at BLTSRC
- The Stakes: Cumberland currently sits at the top of the regional group. A win here would be a huge statement of intent for our Roehampton ambitions.
We need your support! The players feed off the energy of the home crowd. Please come down to the ITC, wear your club colors, and cheer the boys on to what could be the most important win of the season.
